✍️ Writing Exercises: Mapping Your Character’s Journey

1. Who Are They, Really?
Write a short scene before your story begins.

  • Who is your character?

  • What decisions do they make and why?

  • What do they want most?

  • What scares them?

  • What lies do they believe about themselves?

2. Who Have They Become?
Now, write a scene after your story ends.

  • How has your character changed?

  • What choices do they make differently now?

  • What fears have they overcome?

  • What truths have they embraced?

3. Highlight the Arc
Grab a highlighter or use your editing tool to mark every moment your character makes an important choice or reveals something about themselves.

  • Do these moments feel like one evolving person?

  • Or does your character seem to flip-flop between different personalities?

🔍 Extra Reflection Questions:

  • Does your character’s core personality stay consistent throughout the story?

  • Are there any sudden shifts that feel out of place?

  • Are all traits and interests introduced used again or important to the plot?

  • Does your character’s arc feel earned, believable, and satisfying?

  • What do you want readers to feel or understand about your character by the end?
