Character Consistency Writing Prompts & Reflection
✍️ Writing Exercises: Mapping Your Character’s Journey
1. Who Are They, Really?
Write a short scene before your story begins.
Who is your character?
What decisions do they make and why?
What do they want most?
What scares them?
What lies do they believe about themselves?
2. Who Have They Become?
Now, write a scene after your story ends.
How has your character changed?
What choices do they make differently now?
What fears have they overcome?
What truths have they embraced?
3. Highlight the Arc
Grab a highlighter or use your editing tool to mark every moment your character makes an important choice or reveals something about themselves.
Do these moments feel like one evolving person?
Or does your character seem to flip-flop between different personalities?
🔍 Extra Reflection Questions:
Does your character’s core personality stay consistent throughout the story?
Are there any sudden shifts that feel out of place?
Are all traits and interests introduced used again or important to the plot?
Does your character’s arc feel earned, believable, and satisfying?
What do you want readers to feel or understand about your character by the end?
